Residents using Tafelsig Clinic in Mitchells Plain will experience temporary service amendments from next week when construction begins on a major upgrade to the facility. The project  forms part of the City’s R15 million investment in City Health infrastructure this financial year.

The project will see the construction of a first-floor extension, the installation of a lift, new internal and external staircases, as well as a series of ground-floor upgrades aimed at improving accessibility, safety, and service delivery.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the upgrade is essential to meeting increasing demand at the facility.

“This upgrade will help us meet the growing demand for services and provide safer, more accessible care for residents. We anticipate that work will be completed by the end of October 2026.”

To ensure continuity of care during the construction period, services at Tafelsig Clinic will be temporarily reallocated to nearby facilities, including the Thusong Centre located opposite the clinic.

The Thusong Centre will provide:

  • Child Health services
  • Curative services
  • Immunisation
  • Nutrition services
  • Matrix substance abuse services

The Tafelsig Community Day Centre (CDC) will offer:

  • Adult curative services
  • Mental Health services
  • BANC (Basic Antenatal Care)
  • Reproductive Health services
  • TB services
  • HIV services

All pharmacy services will continue to operate from the main pharmacy at Tafelsig CDC, while Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) medicine parcels will be issued at the Thusong Centre.

To manage patient flow and reduce congestion, the clinic will continue using an appointment system.
