Infrastructure Upgrades to Trigger Planned Power Interruptions in Parts of Cape Town

Planned power cuts

Residents in Plumstead and surrounding suburbs have been notified of planned electricity supply interruptions as the City of Cape Town carries out essential infrastructure upgrades and maintenance work.

The interruption is scheduled for Saturday, 20 June 2026, with a possible alternative date of 27 June 2026 should circumstances prevent the work from proceeding as planned.

“It is important to note that interruptions to supply will only impact the areas on the map and only on the relevant date. The work will be carried out from 20:00 on Saturday 20 June 2026 until 08:00 on Sunday 21 June 2026, if all goes to plan. An alternate date is also provided should the work not go ahead as planned,” the City says.

The areas that could be impacted include Plumstead, Grassy Park, Lotus River, Ottery, Wetton, Fairways, Wynberg, Rosmead, Parkwood and Southfield, as well as other surrounding neighbourhoods.

The City has urged residents to treat all electrical installations as live during the interruption period, even if power appears to be off, as supply could be switched back on without prior notice. Households are also advised to switch off appliances beforehand to reduce the risk of damage caused by power surges when electricity is restored.

The City of Cape Town has apologised for the inconvenience and says the work is necessary to ensure long-term reliability of the electricity network.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested for child abandonment after a three-year-old girl was found alone on the Sea Point Promenade on Youth Day.

According to police, members attached to the Public Order Police (POPS) were conducting visible policing duties during a protest march on Tuesday, 16 June, when the child was discovered by passersby.

“A girl child was found sitting all by herself by runners who passed her several times and alerted the members,” said Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Captain F.C. Van Wyk.

Officers took the child to Sea Point police station and proceeded with an investigation.

Later in the day, a man informed officers that he was the father of the child, leading to his arrest.

“A child abandonment case was opened for investigation. A 32-year-old male was arrested, and will appear in court soon for the mentioned charge.”

The Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Captain F.C. Van Wyk, advised that the three-year-old was subsequently placed in the care of the Department of Social Development (DSD).

The Social Development MEC, Jaco Londt, confirmed that the department was aware of the matter and that it “has safeguarded the child concerned”.

“The matter has been referred to the relevant Designated Child Protection Organisation who will be conducting an investigation in line with the Children’s Act,” said Londt.

Londt explained that when an abandoned child is reported, a child protection social worker is assigned to ensure the child’s safety and conduct the necessary risk assessments while efforts are made to trace family members.

The Department further encouraged eligible residents to consider becoming “safety parents”, to provide temporary care for vulnerable children while child protection investigations are underway.

“Police clearance as well as screening against the Child Protection register is required for the applicant and those who live on the property. Training on the Children’s Act is also provided. Safety parents provide a temporary home in a caring environment for children while child protection investigations are underway, which can take about 3 months or more.”

Joshua’s story and dreams

We met another young dreamer through our friends at Reach for A Dream this morning. Joshua is 9 years old and has gone a lot of challenges in his young life already. Since the age of 2 already he was in and out of Hospital. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at a young age.

Despite all of Joshua’s challenges he remains a bubbly, outgoing, and talkative young boy who has a very open and confident personality. His dream right now is to be able to pursue his passion for gaming.

Thank you to FFS and the Wasserman Family – Wilhelm, Michelle, Mia and Anika for generously giving Josh his very own PS5. And thank you to our friends at Computer Mania who shared some joy of their 35th birthday with Josh by giving him his own VR set to make gaming a bit easier.

City warns against sharing unverified food safety-related complaints online

city

City of Cape Town’s Health Directorate has urged the public to refrain from sharing information on social media without verifying it from a reliable source. This comes after several food safety-related incidents have been reported and gone viral online.

The City has noted that while these reports are being investigated, many claims are shared widely before the facts have been established.

“City Health is aware of the recent increase in food safety-related complaints received and allegations made regarding foodstuffs purchased from informal economy businesses.”

The complaints received this week have reportedly ranged from alleged tablets found in chips and biscuits to paraffin in cool drinks.

According to the directorate, its Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) investigate complaints about food safety, work with businesses to prevent harm, and take legal action when necessary to protect consumers.

However, false, malicious, or deliberately fabricated complaints, including cases where food items are sabotaged to create the appearance of contamination, seriously undermine the work of practitioners. This may also lead to legal consequences or criminal charges for false statements.

“Communities must be mindful of what circulates on social media and question the legitimacy of information shared. Not all posts are accurate – please verify before sharing,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham

In one incident, there were reports circulating online of tablets found in chips bought at a local shop in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.

The manufacturer of the chips, Truda Foods, responded to complaints and added that it has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The manufacturer added that it will work closely with the relevant authorities, health officials and other stakeholders.

It added that at this stage, no evidence has been presented to the manufacturer linking any alleged pill found in a packet of chips.

Higham has, however, added that in the event of a food-safety incident, residents should see a doctor for medical confirmation, report to City Health, open a police case, and swear under oath on what transpired.

The details of the business, its location, the product name and description, and the date and time of purchase or consumption should also be provided.

Additionally, the implicated foodstuff, photos or packaging, where available, date markings, batch numbers, and details of the problem (odour, appearance, foreign object, symptoms experienced), etc., should be stated.

“Our Environmental Health Practitioners will investigate all complaints received, but investigations may take time. Our team conducts thorough investigations, including patient interviews, business owner interviews, premises inspections, food sampling, detention and seizure of suspected foodstuffs, and legal action for non-compliance,” added  Higham.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that Bishop Lavis police attended to the scene, where several vehicles, including a bus, were found damaged on the side of the road.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk says multiple people were injured in the crash, which resulted in two fatalities.

“Several persons were injured and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The bus had no passengers, and the driver sustained no injuries. A blue Opel Astra vehicle was found with a 29-year-old driver, who sustained slight injuries to his head and leg. He had no passengers,” said Van Wyk.

He added that a Datsun company vehicle was also involved.

“A driver of unknown age sustained serious injuries to his head and legs, while a passenger sustained slight injuries to the leg. Both were transported to hospital by medical personnel. Another passenger in the vehicle was declared dead at the scene.”

Van Wyk further confirmed that a 45-year-old pedestrian, who was on his way to work, was also killed in the crash.

A Kia delivery vehicle was also involved, with the driver sustaining serious injuries to the head and legs, while a 24-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

According to the passenger, they were en route to deliver Blue Ribbon bread at the time of the crash.
