The Department of Home Affairs has issued a strong warning to the public after a fake social media notice began circulating, falsely claiming that people would receive a R250 reward for reporting undocumented foreign nationals.
The department has dismissed the message as completely fraudulent, stressing that it did not originate from Home Affairs or Minister Leon Schreiber.
In a statement on social media, the department stressed that the misleading post risks fuelling confusion and tension at a time when public emotions are already heightened ahead of a planned anti-immigration march.
“The notice currently circulating is fraudulent and did not originate from the Department of Home Affairs. Neither the Department nor the Minister of Home Affairs offers monetary rewards to members of the public for reporting undocumented foreign nationals.”

The department further urged South Africans to think carefully before forwarding information online, warning that misinformation can quickly spiral and inflame already sensitive situations.
“We encourage the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it. Let us all play our part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement, and respect for the rule of law.”
