The future of electric automotive transport will be on show in Cape Town next month, as the ABB FIA Formula-E World Championship will make its long-awaited debut in the Mother City.
Thursday, 26 January 2023 marks 30 days before the Gen3 cars take to the streets of Green Point. It’s not all about the racing. Yes, it plays an important role, but it’s also about accelerating our move away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable, clean energy.
The first Cape Town Formula-E race in the fully electric racing series – with net zero emissions since inception – will give Capetonians an opportunity to experience Green technology for themselves.
“We are staging Africa’s Green Economic Summit at century city. That is about connecting global capital with African opportunity,” Said Iain banner, chairman of e-movement.
Throughout the course of the action-packed day of Formula-E, fans can learn about, and enjoy, all the new clean technologies.
“We have got an incredible festival called Electric. We will have everything e and electric as part of the total ecosystem for the race for all the racegoers to enjoy.
“Bicycles, one-wheelers, scooters, motor cars, skateboards, charging solutions. All the above will be on show, so people can come and learn about e.”

Clean fun Formula-E rocket speed
What might catch some of the more casual fans off guard is the speeds these cars can get up to. The former model, Spark SRT05e, or Gen2, which was in use since the 2018-2019 FIA Formula-E Championships, was itself a little rocket and could reach speeds of 280 km/h.
The new Spark Gen3 has nearly double the horsepower and can reach a top speed of 322 km/h.
The importance of evolution in the sport is incalculable. Racing has always played a crucial part in the development of road cars. From aerodynamics to onboard technologies, the more race cars develop, the more road cars will evolve.
This is especially an important fact, as we move toward reducing – and one day eliminating – emissions.
Tickets for the Cape Town leg of the ABB FIA Formula-E World Championship range from R350 to R3 450 and can be purchased here.
