Fifth accused in ‘Steroid King’ case assassinated, months after Lifman

Published on

The assassination of another alleged underworld figure, and the 5th accused in the ‘Steroid King’ Brian Wainstein murder trial to be killed, has sent shockwaves through Cape Town’s gangland.

Andre Naudé, a close associate of Mark Lifman, was gunned down on Voortrekker Road in Parow on Thursday afternoon.

His killing comes 7 months after Lifman was murdered in George.

Lifman and Naude were both accused in the murder trial of slain “Steroid King” Brian Wainstein.

The alleged leader of the Sexy Boys gang, Jerome Booysen, is also an accused in that trial.

Booysen, who arrived at the crime scene shortly after it happened, told News24 that he is shocked as Naude was a friend. He added that despite the attack on Naude he does not live in fear.

Naude is now the 5th person in the Wainstein matter to have been assassinated in recent years. In addition to Naude and Lifman, accused William “Red” Stevens, Anthony “Amier” van der Watt and Jason Maits were murdered, between 2021 and 2022.

There were initially 13 accused on the charge sheet.

Naude’s murder is set to delay that trial even further.

According to sources with knowledge of the Cape Town underworld, this signifies a big shift, and that someone is ‘cleaning house.’

Responding to the scene in Voortrekker Road yesterday, Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit investigators were combing the crime scene for clues.

The Police’s FC Van Wyk says, according to reports, a vehicle pulled up next to Naude’s vehicle at around 14:40 and fired several shots. Naude was killed on the spot, while another occupant in his car, a 61-year-old man, was wounded.  Two other males aged 45 and 54 escaped injury.

A case of murder and three attempted murders has been opened, and no arrests have been effected yet.

Van Wyk has urged anyone with information to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Karl Jooste, on 071 300 5029 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
