Entries are now open for the 13th edition of the highly anticipated Slave Route Challenge which is set to take place on Sunday, 1 June 2025 in Cape Town.
The Slave Route Challenge offers participants a unique opportunity to explore Cape Town’s
historic landmarks, commemorating the resilience and strength of those impacted by slavery.
Runners and walkers will pass key sites such as the Cape Town Castle, District Six Museum, and the Slave Lodge, each holding deep historical significance.
A highlight of the race is the infamous “Koesister Hill” on Pentz Street in Bo-Kaap, where
participants will push through a steep climb before being rewarded with a freshly made koesister at the top—a well-earned treat along the journey that celebrates Cape Malay heritage and culture.
Hosted by Itheko Sport Athletic Club, the event has become a major fixture on Cape Town’s
sporting calendar, attracting participants from across South Africa and beyond. It is held under the auspices of Western Province Athletics, in association with the City of Cape Town, Peninsula Beverages, and broadcast partner Smile FM.

2025 Race Beneficiary: EduFundi
This year, the Slave Route Challenge will raise funds for EduFundi, a non-profit dedicated to
improving educational outcomes for children in underprivileged communities. Every step taken in the race will support EduFundi’s mission to empower educators and transform learning environments in historically disadvantaged areas.
