With the end of the first school term looming, this short holiday break could be the last time to catch some rays at Cape Town’s beaches and pools before winter sets in, and they are primed for safe holiday fun!

The last day of the first term is on 28 March, with the second term commencing on 8 April.

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department has amended community swimming pool operational hours to accommodate the school holidays.

From 31 March, community pools will be open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, giving residents plenty of time to soak up the autumn sun.

Beachgoers take note—lifeguards are on duty daily, keeping a watchful eye from 10:00 to 18:00. But safety is a team effort! Stick to lifeguard-patrolled areas, watch out for rip currents, and, of course, no swimming under the influence.

Some beaches, such as Clifton 1st-3rd, are patrolled but have no designated safe swimming areas. Others, like Fish Hoek and Muizenberg, have lifeguards and marked safe zones, so check before you dive in!

The Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, has urged bathers to adhere to the rules.

“We encourage residents and especially learners to make use of the City’s recreational facilities during the school holidays. It’s important for parents and guardians to always know the whereabouts of children and ensure that they are closely supervised, particularly around water bodies.”
