Celebrating the Legacy and Legend of Madiba

South Africans, along with the rest of world, is celebrating the legacy of the Former President freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela. July 18 marks the international annual day that sheds light on the legend of the man who shaped the 20th century.

 

 

It is the vision of Nelson Mandela International Day for people from different walks of life to unite and act decisively against injustices in their communities: climate change, food injustice and drug abuse.

Mandela had several accolades under his belt. Speaking of which, did you know Madiba was a former amateur boxer. He received a World Boxing Council championship belt from American boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard.

 

Madiba is the face and iconic figure of a movement that toppled South Africa’s Apartheid regime.

He was also a human rights lawyer, before becoming the country’s first democratically elected president and international peacemaker.

During times of turbulence and hardship, Madiba’s legacy shows us that ordinary people can make a huge impact. That with our hearts and hands, we can fight for dignity over humiliation, fight against injustice and learn to forgive.

 

In 2014, the Nelson Mandela Prize was established by the UN General Assembly. It is an award that recognises the achievements of individuals who went above and beyond to serve humanity.

 

 

 

Mandela Day 2023 appeals to all people to use their hands to bring about good in the world. Specifically, to end hunger and mitigate the devastation of climate change.

 

“His mission as an anti-apartheid revolutionary was establishing equality and freedom for all women, men and children,” says Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.
