Cape Town’s inclement weather causes flooding across city

Published on

The heavy downpours in Cape Town have resulted in localised flooding in some areas. According to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Operation Centre, roadways have been affected, as a result of the volume of water entering the stormwater systems.

The affected areas include: Fish Hoek, Ocean View, Kommetjie, Sun Valley, Dido Valley, Table View and more.

The municipality’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell says teams are hard at work, attending to all the requests.

“No other major impacts have been recorded thus far. The current forecast is expected to remain in place for most of today – with the rain abating later this evening,” Powell said.

Members of the public, with particular reference to those travelling on roads, have been requested to remain vigilant and to report any weather-related emergencies to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.

The City’s traffic services have confirmed that several roads are affected by the adverse weather conditions. Spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said that are no full road closures at present, but that lane closures are in place:

• Owen Road eastbound after 35th Avenue, Elsies River
• Strandfontein Road northbound at Klip Road – left lane affected
• Malibongwe Drive eastbound before Sandown Road
• Jakes Gerwel Drive southbound between Weltevreden Bridge and Oliver Tambo Drive
• Blaauwberg Road in both directions at the MyCiTi bus station

“Motorists are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and proceed with caution,” Jacobs said.
