Tributes are pouring in for former Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks after the shocking news that he passed away at the age of 37.
It is believed he suffered a heart attack on Wednesday evening. He was diagnosed with a serious heart condition in 2016.
The Roses United Rugby Club posted a heartfelt tribute to him on Facebook, conveying their condolences to his family. Hendricks’ rugby journey started at the Roses United RFC, where he honed his skills and passion for the game, ultimately leading him to fulfill his dreams on the grandest stages of rugby.
“The untimely passing of Cornal Hendricks has sent shockwaves throughout the Drakenstein Region and beyond, leaving a deep and lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The club says Cornell was not only a remarkably talented rugby player but also a beacon of inspiration for many aspiring athletes.
“Representing esteemed teams such as the Boland Cavaliers, Springboks, BlitzBokke, Toyota Cheetahs, and Vodacom Bulls, Cornell showcased his exceptional abilities and dedication to the sport. Recently, he returned to the Boland Cavaliers, further solidifying his commitment to rugby and his community. His contributions to the rugby world and the positive influence he had on the lives of others will be fondly remembered and cherished.”
His former high school also expressed their sadness at his untimely passing. Hendricks attended Bergrivier High School in Wellington and played for the 1st team.
It was here that he caught the eye of former Springbok flyhalf Louis Koen acting as a backline coach for the Boland Rugby Union.
“Our hearts are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of one of our beloved old-zeBRas and an inspiration to many, Cornal Hendricks. The sudden passing of Cornal has sent shockwaves globally. We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family. We are mourning his beautiful soul with you.”
The school says he was truly an inspiration.
“He went through lots of trials and tribulations concerning his health but he persevered and always had a positive outlook on life, and assisted others wherever he could.”
The Vodacom Bulls says Cornal was known for his passion, energy, and infectious smile both on and off the field.
He was a key player for the Bulls from 2018 to 2023.
CEO Edgar Rathbone has called him a cherished teammate and inspirational figure, while rugby director Jake White has praised his resilience and influence, especially after overcoming an early career setback.
Hendricks made 12 test appearances for the Springboks, and also won Commonwealth Gold with the Springbok Sevens outfit in 2014.
He represented Boland Cavaliers, the Cheetahs and Bulls domestically.
