Betway SA20: MI Cape Town off to a good start

Published on

MI Cape Town kicked off Betway SA20 Season 3 with a statement performance, securing a dominant 97-run victory over reigning champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape at a packed St George’s Park on Thursday night.

The sold-out crowd, eagerly awaiting a homecoming celebration for the back-to-back champions, left disappointed as MI Cape Town delivered a clinical all-round performance. Dewald Brevis and Delano Potgieter stole the spotlight, guiding the visitors to a commanding win in the season opener.

Brevis Leads with Fireworks

Dewald Brevis showcased his immense talent with a scintillating knock of 57 off just 29 balls, featuring two boundaries and six towering sixes.

The 21-year-old’s innings set the tone for MI Cape Town, as he dismantled the Sunrisers’ bowling attack with clean hitting. Brevis handled the dual spin threat of Simon Harmer and Liam Dawson with ease before launching two successive sixes off Beyers Swanepoel.

One of his monstrous sixes even led to the first entrant in the Betway Catch R2-million competition, with a crowd member completing a stunning one-handed grab.

Although Brevis fell before the final five overs, the momentum was carried forward by Potgieter and George Linde. The pair added an unbeaten 41-run partnership, smashing 24 runs off Marco Jansen’s final over to push MI Cape Town to 174/7.

Potgieter Dominates with Career-Best Bowling

Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s chase never took off, as Trent Boult struck early with a brilliant opening spell. Boult, the New Zealand pace maestro, bowled a double-wicket maiden in the third over, including a beauty that swung back to remove England opener Zak Crawley.

From there, it was the Delano Potgieter show. The all-rounder recorded career-best figures of 5/10, ripping through the Sunrisers’ batting lineup. Potgieter’s dream spell ensured that the defending champions were bundled out for just 77, giving MI Cape Town their first-ever win against the Sunrisers in the history of the tournament.

While Brevis, Boult, and Richard Gleeson (who also chipped in with crucial contributions) were all nominated for Player of the Match, it was Potgieter who earned the accolade through a fans’ vote, thanks to his stunning bowling performance.

MI Cape Town will look to carry their momentum into their next match against the Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Saturday, 11 January. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Eastern Cape will aim for redemption when they face Paarl Royals at Boland Park on the same day.

It’s a dream start for MI Cape Town and a reminder that this year’s SA20 promises fireworks from the very first ball.
