Barbie SA launched the doll alongside media personality, Kirya Gangiah, to shine a spotlight on South Africa’s diversity of cultures. The limited edition doll comes ahead of one of the biggest cultural events of the year, the festival of lights, which starts on Thursday. Mattel South Africa’s Terusha Naidoo, say she is thrilled to launched this doll in the country.
“The Barbie Diwali doll embodies India’s vibrant cultural heritage, bringing it to life on a global stage, and celebrates the approximate 1.5 million Indian people in South Africa, who have been part of the rich tapestry of our country since the mid-1800’s.”

Gangiah says the doll’s release is a chance to deepen cultural pride. She hopes it also inspires younger generation to embrace their heritage.
“Barbie has always inspired kids to dream of limitless possibilities, and they have put actions to those words by offering the older generation the kind of validation they’ve been looking for, and the younger generation, the nod they’ve needed to embrace their cultural identity in a modern, multi-cultural society like ours.”
The doll is clothed in a “Moonlight Bloom” outfit, comprising a vibrant lehenga skirt, floral koti vest, and choli top patterned with dahlias, jasmine, and lotus flowers. It is complemented by golden bangles and shimmering earrings.
Mattel SA says the outfit is a blend of traditional Indian craftsmanship with a modern touch, which is Dongre’s signature design style. Dongre says this working with Barbie on this doll is in perfect alignment with her values.
“My brand has always been focused on empowerment, and Barbie represents the ultimate symbol of limitless potential for girls everywhere… As we celebrate Diwali, Barbie and I encourage fans worldwide to embrace the beautiful heritage of Indian fashion and culture.”
