The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has unveiled a set of proposed road upgrades aimed at easing congestion and improving transport infrastructure in Muizenberg.

Residents, commuters, and other stakeholders are invited to attend upcoming information sessions and submit their feedback on the plans.

The upgrades are part of the City’s broader Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan and Congestion Relief Programme, focusing on enhancing capacity, improving traffic flow, and promoting safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists.

Public Information Days Scheduled

To ensure transparency and community involvement, the City will host two public information days at the Zandvlei Lookout Community Centre in Lakeside:

  • Wednesday, 14 May 2025, from 18:00 to 20:00
  • Saturday, 17 May 2025, from 10:00 to 12:30

“These information days offer the perfect opportunity for residents to engage with City officials, ask questions, and provide feedback. The proposals represent a major investment in Muizenberg’s road infrastructure,” said Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.

Key Proposals Across Muizenberg

Royal Road (from Vlei Road to Prince George Drive):

  • Upgrade to a dual carriageway
  • 5m-wide shared pedestrian and cycling path (south side)
  • Formalised parking on both sides
  • Public transport embayments
  • Major intersection upgrades, including:

  1. Dual lane roundabout at Beach Road/Vlei Road
  2. Signalised intersection at Recreation Road
  3. Multiple left-in/left-out conversions to improve flow and safety

Baden Powell Drive (Prince George Drive to Sanderling Road):

  • Dual carriageway conversion
  • 3m-wide shared pedestrian and cycling paths on both sides
  • Mid-block crossings and public transport embayments
  • New signalised intersection at Sunrise Boulevard
  • Dual lane roundabout at New Baden Powell Drive/Sanderling Road

Vlei Road (Royal Road to Alexander Road):

  • New single-lane roundabout at Albertyn, Alexander, and Henley Road intersection
  • Beach Road and Atlantic Road (Main Road to Royal Road):
  • Access changes at the Civic Centre
  • 2.5m-wide cycle lane on Beach Road (south side)

Public Participation Encouraged

The City emphasized that these are draft proposals and will be refined based on public input. Councillor Quintas urged residents and road users to participate in the process.

“These upgrades are designed to improve mobility in a busy part of the city and include safer infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. We want to hear from the people who live in and travel through Muizenberg daily — your input is essential,” Quintas added.
