If you’re searching for activities for the family, you’re in luck as SANParks‘ SA National Parks Week commences on Saturday. From Saturday, 16 September to Sunday 24 September, the public will have free access to the country’s 21 national parks…5 of which are situated within the Western Cape.
SANParks spokesperson Lauren Howard-Clayton says in addition to celebrating the country’s heritage, the aim is to provide education and create awareness surrounding conservation issues:
“This year, it’s an opportunity for South African citizens to visit our national parks, the ones managed by SANParks for free. This to explore and get to know their national parks, that are situated right on their doorstep.”
She says this is being made possible in collaboration with Total South Africa and FNB. The free access week is traditionally during heritage month each year.
The aim of National Parks Week
“This heritage month is the perfect opportunity for many South Africans to visit the Cape of Good Hope situated in Table Mountain National Park, to experience the new exhibition that is there which speaks about your heritage. It tells you where all of us came from. It’s a very interactive, audio visual exhibition about the origins and early sapiens behaviour. It’s definitely the experience of a lifetime. We also have many other facilities out there such as the West Coast National Park, Agulhas, Bontebok and Tankwa National Parks.”
What you need to gain free access
“All you need to do is bring your SA ID along, or your valid SA driving license. And don’t worry if you lost your ID, we do accept copies of your ID on your phone. That’s all you need to gain free access to any national park,” concludes Howard-Clayton.
