Free bus rides programme for Cape jobseekers enters its second phase

Published on

The Western Cape Government has rolled out the second phase of its jobseeker travel voucher programme.

The initiative was introduced last year, to help unemployed residents access job opportunities by allowing them to travel for free on Golden Arrow buses across the Cape metro.

Since the initial launch in February 2024, over 3 700 unemployed residents have made use of the service.

“Too many capable and willing residents remain unemployed, not because they lack skills or motivation, but simply because they cannot afford to get to an interview, a training centre, or their first day of work,” said the Western Cape Mobility Department’s Muneera Allie.

WHAT’S NEW IN PHASE 2:

  1. Self-Registration: Jobseekers can now register online directly, removing the previous requirement to go through a registered employer.
  2. 6 Free Trips Per Voucher: Vouchers now carry six free trips, usable between 9am and 3pm, Monday to Friday.
  3. Extended Duration: The programme has been extended until 31 March 2026.

In Phase 2, local employers are also urged to register as partners and offer the travel vouchers to prospective employees.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku said, “We know from our data that those who received vouchers had a greater chance of attending interviews, securing work, and participating in skills development. No one should be left behind because they cannot afford to get to an interview.”

HOW TO APPLY:

Jobseekers can register online by completing the Jobseeker Registration prompts on the Portal and then presenting their ID at Golden Arrow kiosks to collect their Gold Card.
