ALL-DAY ACTION AND ENTERTAINMENT AT EXTREME FESTIVAL

NATIONAL TITLES AT STAKE AS EXTREME FESTIVAL HITS KILLARNEY

Extreme Festival racing hits Killarney for the second and final time this year on Saturday 21 September, with the country’s top drivers battling it out for National titles. This is the penultimate round of South Africa’s premier circuit racing series; battle lines have been drawn and there are championships at stake.

The most spectacular vehicles on the Extreme Festival programme are the Extreme Supercars driven by Dunlop, with exotic machines such as Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Audi R8s – and a few hot BMWs and Nissan GTRs to lend even more spice to the mix. These cars lap the 3.3km Killarney circuit in a very quick 1minute 7.7 seconds, averaging 175km/h through Killarney’s four tight corners, two kinks and the double apex Sarel’s Sweep. That’s less than a second outside the ultimate lap record, set in a Ginetta LMP2 car!

The SA Touring Car & SATC SupaCup category is South Africa’s premier wings and slicks tin-top race series, featuring Toyota Corollas, BMW 328tis and Volkswagen Golfs in the Touring Car line-up. With vital championship points and home-town bragging rights at stake, the racing is expected to be fierce.

In addition, the SupaCup category is no longer a one-make series as the Volkswagen Polos are joined by a radically tuned Toyota Starlet hatchback.  This category is known for some of the tightest racing in South Africa, with very evenly matched cars – and very determined drivers!

Astron energy Polo Cup racing, you’ll discover, is a contact sport. The fields are big, the majority of the drivers are young, ambitions and aggressive, and the cars are all identical. That’s a recipe for very robust racing – to put it politely!

With a number of local contenders in a field of close to 40 entries, the Sunbet ZX10 Masters Cup category has a distinct ‘North versus South’ flavour. Killarney hotshots Trevor Westman and David Enticott in particular have each won Masters Cup races in the past and will be keen to capitalise on their home track advantage.

The Gazoo Racing SA Cup combines two very different types of car, with six GT86 sports coupes racing against six Yaris GR ‘hot hatches’; which model is faster depends very much on who wants it more.

But the purists will tell you that the most exacting category of circuit racing is the Investchem Formula 1600’s and Formula Ford Kent single-seaters. With open, exposed wheels the slightest touch can be disastrous and precision driving is a pre-requisite. This is not a category for sissies.
