Cringe, funny moments from the Oscars 2023

Published on

Michelle Yeoh stole the show in her stunning white gown and became the first Asian woman to be recognised as Best Actress. This much-deserved honour follows an expansive career in martial arts and action movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

“Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are past your prime,” said Yeoh.

Everything Everywhere All at Once received the Best Picture Award at the 95th annual Academy Awards at the weekend. The movie was also named the Best Original Screenplay.

And this year’s ceremony had its own chaos, cringe and memes! Here are some of the most viral parts from the Oscars 2023 edition.

Memes (Everything) Everywhere All At Once

Hugh Grant left us cringing!

The actor stammered through one of the most excruciating moments ahead of the ceremony. “The whole of humanity is here … it’s Vanity Fair”, he said in an interview with the magazine – that launched a flurry of meme responses. He was referring to the 1848 novel by William Thackeray. Watch how interviewer, model Ashley Graham, clearly grasped for an ‘interesting’ answer from the actor:

And then Hugh Grant took to the stage and called himself “basically a scrotum”. See for yourself…

He appeared alongside his former co-star Andie MacDowell to present the award for Production Design. Grant poked fun at his own appearance while praising MacDowell. Viewers took to Twitter in response.

Brendan Fraser received the Best Actor in a Leading Role award, for The Whale. The German film, All Quiet on the Western Front took home four awards. And Avatar: The Way of Water won Best Visual Effects, while Top Gun: Maverick received the Oscar for sound.

Happy birthday James Martin!

Name something better than getting the entire Oscars audience to sing happy birthday to you. That’s right! Watched how the crowd rendered ‘happy birthday’ for lead actor of An Irish Goodbye, James Martin:

He even got a shining thumbs-up from fellow Irish actor, Colin Farrell. He stars in The Banshees of Inisherin. An Irish Goodbye is a tale of two brothers checking off the bucket list of their deceased mother.

Later in the night Navalny won the award for Best Documentary Feature. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won the award for its costume design. And Guillermo del Toro snatched the Best Animated Film award for his Pinocchio.

The Queens arrive at the Academy Awards

Both Rihanna and Laddy Gaga made unexpected entrances at this year’s ceremony. Gaga left the crowds gawking in distinct mesh corsetry by Versace. But managed to save a photographer from a stumble on the red carpet:

Rihanna made her unexpected entrance in covert attire. She later pulled off an elaborate wardrobe change to perform her Academy-nominated songs. She adorned the stage in a sparkly floor-length pants-set:

Later she embraced her baby bump in a glamorous Alaïa gown:

Lady Gaga then swapped her glam look for casual cosplay during her performance of Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick:

It’s zoo-frenzy at the Oscars!

We think the real winners of the night were the animals! You heard right animals – of all sizes and forms – stormed the stage and aisles at the Academy Awards. Creatures like Jenny, the certified emotional support donkey glistened in the spotlight at Dolby Theater.

“If you’re feeling upset or if you win or if you’re feeling anxious or if you just love mules, come up and give her a hug,” said host Jimmy Kimmel:

Joining the furry frenzy was the titular lead of Cocaine Bear (literally a movie about a bear on cocaine…). She appeared alongside her director, Elizabeth Banks, on stage to present an award:

The bear later stumbled down the aisles to torment fellow attendees – including one unlucky Malala Yousafzai! But the cringe did not stop for the Nobel Prize laureate, when host Jimmy Kimmel asked her this pressing question:

Kimmel returned to host the Academy Awards for the third time. The comic kept thing light during the awards show, but wasted no time bringing up the big moment of last year’s ceremony. The moment when Will Smith charged up on the stage and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about Smith’s wife.
