Five alleged gang members aged between 27 and 40 have been arrested following a double murder in Military Road, Steenberg, on Tuesday, 20 October, after a high-speed police chase that ended in Kirstenhof.

The two victims, aged 23 and 37, were fatally wounded in the shooting at around 12:30, prompting a police response that soon turned into a pursuit of the alleged perpetrators.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that officers attending to the double murder were informed that the suspects had fled the scene in a red Volkswagen Polo.

“The team responded to reports of a double murder at Military Road, where two males aged 23 and 37 were fatally wounded at about 12:30. They were informed that the suspects fled in a red VW Polo,” police said.

A high-speed chase ensued as officers pursued the vehicle. The suspects allegedly abandoned the red Polo in Kirstenhof before hijacking a white Toyota RunX in an attempt to get away.

Their escape was short-lived, however, as police apprehended the five men shortly afterwards.

During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered two assault rifles. The suspects are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
