As South Africa marks Social Development Month this October, Social Development Minister Dina Pule is calling for greater protection of social workers.

Under this year’s theme, “Strengthening Families through Partnerships,” Pule has condemned harassment, intimidation, threats and violence against social workers, urging communities to help create safer environments for those who provide essential services to people in need.

“Social workers serve on the frontline of some of society’s most difficult challenges. They protect children from abuse and neglect, support families in distress and help individuals access care and assistance.”

She said safe working environments and cooperation from communities are essential for social workers to carry out their duties effectively.

“No disagreement, frustration or dissatisfaction with a social work intervention justifies violence, threats or intimidation.”

The call for greater protection comes amid ongoing safety concerns involving social development officials in the Western Cape, following another hijacking involving a departmental vehicle in Khayelitsha.

The incident occurred on Monday, 19 October, while two social service professionals were leaving Khayelitsha to attend court in Parow.

Western Cape Minister of Social Development Wendy Kaizer-Philander condemned the continued attacks on departmental professionals carrying out their duties to support and protect vulnerable residents.

“It is deeply distressing to receive news of yet another incident of this nature, particularly during Social Development Month. Social service professionals play a critical role in protecting children, supporting families and strengthening communities. They must be able to carry out their duties without fear of being targeted by criminals,” said Kaizer-Philander.

According to Kaizer-Philander, the latest incident brings the total number of hijackings involving departmental professionals to 28 since January this year.

Meanwhile, Pule has urged community members and leaders to reject violence, report threats and use the appropriate departmental complaints channels to resolve concerns constructively.
