Detectives are continuing their investigation into an elderly couple’s alleged attempt to “buy a child”. 

A Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, said officers were alerted to the incident in Table View where the couple reportedly approached a babysitter and a young child. A search for the couple then ensued.

“SAPS members responded to an all-points bulletin following an incident in Table View, where the suspects allegedly approached a babysitter and a young child and offered to buy the child,” said Traut in a statement.  

Traut noted that the search led officers to Melkbosstrand, where the 75-year-old man and 68-year-old woman were arrested on Tuesday afternoon. They face charges of attempted kidnapping and human trafficking.  

The couple are yet to appear in court on these charges, despite more than 48 hours having passed since their arrest. Under the law, the accused should have been brought before the court within 48 hours of their arrest.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and further information may be released as the investigation progresses and circumstances are clarified,” said Traut.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazalila confirmed that the case docket is back with police. 

“The case was not enrolled. The docket was referred back to the police for further investigation,” said Ntabazalila.
