The Knysna Municipality has confirmed that one of the men killed in a shooting in Bongani on Thursday night, 20 August, was a former ward councillor.
The ANC’s Mandla Matiwane served in Ward 7 from 2016 to 2021. The second man killed was reportedly a taxi-boss.
Police say the two men were in a vehicle when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them at around 21:00.
The murders come just a day after former mayor and current ward 8 councillor, the ANC’s Aubrey Tsengwa, was killed in the Joodsekamp area of the town.
Tsengwa was shot at approximately 21:20 on Wednesday as he drove home with three passengers in the car. The three passengers were injured and taken to hospital.
Police are investigating whether the two incidents could be linked.
The provincial serious violent crimes detective team, which had been investigating Tsengwa’s murder, has since been reinforced.
No arrests have been made yet.
Anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigations is urged to contact the SAPS Sgt Nobuntu Thundezwa on 082 522 1251.
