Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi says members attached to the Serious Corruption Investigation team of the Hawks based in Bellville detained the suspect on 17 August 2026. Vukubi says they were informed that an Admin Manager at the Shoprite Group had attended a meeting at a restaurant with the suspect, who works for a service provider.

“It was during this meeting that the suspect performed acts of corruption by handing a plastic bag to the Shoprite Admin Manager,” says Vukubi. He added that the bag contained several vaping devices together with something valuable, as stated by the suspect.

He says it later came to light that the something valuable was a white envelope. It contained five thousand rand (R5000.00) cash. There was also an extra five thousand one hundred rand (R5100.00) as gratification in ensuring that his company retains the contract at Shoprite for the procurement of motorcycles. Vukubi says the Hawks were alerted. This led to the arrest of the suspect, who’s expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on 19 August 2026.
