Grade 9 learners across South Africa can now apply to study Marine Sciences as a Grade 10 to 12 school subject in 2027.
The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Ocean Campus offers the subject online, allowing learners to study Marine Sciences even if it is not available at their school.
Marine Sciences is an official CAPS subject that contributes towards the National Senior Certificate. The programme was developed by Ocean Campus educators and approved by Umalusi and the Department of Basic Education.
The subject combines elements of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Geography, covering topics including marine biology, oceanography, climate change, marine conservation and ocean ecosystems.
Learners take part in online lessons and live tutorials, with practical experiences available during school holidays and weekends.
The programme also provides a foundation for careers and further studies in areas including marine biology, oceanography, environmental science, conservation, journalism and marine resource management.
Head of Ocean Campus Marnus Smith says Marine Sciences gives young people an opportunity to better understand the ocean and their role in protecting it.
