Blockbuster Sports Weekend Ahead for Cape Town

Published on

Cape Town is set for a blockbuster weekend of sport as rugby and cricket fans descend on the city for a United Rugby Championship coastal derby and the finale of the Betway SA20.

The action begins on Saturday, 24 January, when the DHL Stormers host the Sharks at DHL Stadium in round 10 of the URC. With more than 40,000 spectators expected, the clash promises a charged atmosphere as the coastal rivals go head-to-head under the lights.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30, with stadium gates opening at 16:30.

The City has urged fans to arrive early to avoid congestion, warning that parking in the Green Point precinct is limited. Spectators are encouraged to park in the CBD and make use of the free MyCiTi shuttle service or the Fan Walk to the stadium.

  • Free MyCiTi shuttles for ticket holders will operate from 16:00, departing from the Civic Centre, Thibault Square and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
  • The final buses will leave the stadium and Green Point precinct at 23:30.
  • Paid parking is available at the CTICC, Parkalot on Jack Craig Street and Harbour Arch, while select City parking areas will open from 15:30 on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Several roads around Green Point, including Fritz Sonnenberg Road and Granger Bay Boulevard, will be affected from early morning until after the match.

The sporting spectacle continues on Sunday, 25 January, with the sold-out Betway SA20 final at Newlands Cricket Ground. The City is partnering with the SA20 League to host the showpiece match of South Africa’s premier T20 competition, which has featured some of the best local and international cricket talent this season.

The final gets underway at 15:30, with gates opening at 12:30.

  • General parking will be available at Groote Schuur Primary and Groote Schuur High School, while Metrorail services will run to and from Newlands Station.
  • A return train ticket will cost R20, with services operating towards Cape Town and Fish Hoek after the match.

With two major events on back-to-back days, Cape Town is bracing for a vibrant, high-energy weekend celebrating top-tier rugby and cricket.
