Two City of Cape Town traffic officers came under fire in Athlone this week after pursuing suspects believed to be linked to a deadly shooting at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday, when the officers were patrolling the area and noticed an armed man running toward a vehicle before fleeing the scene.
A high-speed chase followed through Athlone in the direction of Langa. As the officers attempted to cut off the suspects’ vehicle, the occupants allegedly opened fire, resulting in a brief exchange of gunfire.
While neither officer was injured, a bullet struck their patrol vehicle, rupturing the fuse box and forcing them to abort the pursuit. The suspects managed to escape.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the suspects are possibly connected to the court shooting in which two people were killed earlier that day.
Smith praised the officers’ bravery and confirmed that the City’s Safety and Security Investigations Unit is working closely with the South African Police Service to track the suspects.
“The suspects are wanted on charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and malicious damage to property,” added Smith
