The City of Cape Town is mourning the loss of a Metro Police Neighbourhood Safety officer following a tragic incident in Kensington on Friday.

According to Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, the 30-year-old officer was pursuing a suspect involved in a shooting when he fell during a scuffle on a rooftop and lost consciousness.

“Despite the best efforts of EMTs and hospital staff, I was informed a short while ago that the officer had passed away,” said Smith.

“This is a massive loss to the Safety and Security Directorate, and I wish to extend my condolences to his loved ones.”

Smith added that the City will provide support to the officer’s family and colleagues through its chaplaincy services.

He confirmed that two suspects have since been arrested in connection with the shooting incident.

The name of the officer has not been released yet.

Further details will be released as they become available.
