The Gugulethu Police have registered a case for investigation after an alleged attempted robbery of an independent courier company on Thursday.
According to police Captain F.C. Van Wyk, Gugulethu police members attended to a shooting incident about 10:15 in Godongwana Street, Lusaka, Gugulethu.
Van Wyk says on arrival, the officers interviewed the driver of the courier company, who informed them about a group of males positively armed who robbed them of their cellular telephones and who wanted to hijack their vehicle.
The driver’s assistant reportedly retaliated and shot at the group of males, fatally wounding an 18-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the chest. A 19-year-old male was injured and taken under police guard to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Van Wyk says a 9mm firearm without a serial number was found next to the body of the deceased teenager.
“This firearm was handed in as an exhibit. The firearm, which was used by the driver’s assistant, a Rossi revolver, was confiscated and handed in asan exhibit and further processing.”

Chairperson of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum (CPF), Deon Makiti, has condemned such acts of violence and added that the CPF is glad that no innocent person got hurt in this incident.
Makiti has called on the community to come forward with the information regarding the two armed suspects who fled the scene.
“We are also saddened to learn that it is young boys who carry out some of these horrible crimes, armed at a very young age, more especially when they should be in school.”
