Firefighting efforts in Gansbaai remain in full force as crews battle several active fire lines for the fourth consecutive day.

Teams have been working “throughout the night and early morning” to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby properties and roads, according to the Overstrand Municipality.

Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill confirmed that firefighters were focusing efforts on five different fire lines as of midday on Tuesday.

He added that teams were securing perimeters in key areas, including the Uitkyk scenic viewpoint and along Grootbos Road.

Despite challenging conditions, O’Neill reported that “all roads remain open”, though he cautioned motorists that closures could occur at short notice.

“Drive carefully and give right of way to emergency vehicles,” he urged.

O’Neill said the fire’s behaviour shifted significantly over the past few days.

“It moved down from the mountains, marking a transition from a mountain fire to an urban interface fire, where there are structures and infrastructure at risk”.

Local landowners have been asked to assist by maintaining vigilant mop-up operations on their properties and ensuring that “all fire lines on your property are kept cool and properly monitored”.

The municipality has also reiterated the importance of early reporting of flare-ups, urging residents to contact Fire and Rescue immediately if they spot smoke or flames.

O’Neill, on behalf of Executive Mayor Archie Klaas, extended heartfelt gratitude to the community for their support and donations.

“Your support is greatly appreciated by the fire crews, who remain fighting fit – though understandably exhausted,” he said.

Donations of bottled water, energy drinks, snacks, and rehydration packs are being collected at the Gansbaai Fire Station in Buitekant Street.
