More cases of bullying surfaces at Milnerton High School

Milnerton High School has confirmed that more cases of bullying have surfaced during investigations into the case of assault that recently came to light at the school.

Last week, a video surfaced of a group of boy learners assaulting a fellow learning on he school premises. This has since sparked public outrage, with concerned parents, community members and political parties calling for proper steps to be taken to address this issue.

The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that both minors linked to the assault of a Grade 10 learner have been released on a warning. The learners appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court last week.

Meanwhile, the case against the remaining learners accused of assault has been postponed to 20 January 2026.

According to an official school statement released by school principal, Gert JP van Tonder, during ongoing investigations into the matter, further incidents and videos have come to light and are receiving urgent attention in line with the applicable school’s codes, policies, and regulations.

“No effort is being spared to ensure that appropriate action is taken to hold those responsible accountable, while protecting the rights, safety and well-being of all affected learners.”

Van Tonder added that while the school cannot control what happens beyond its walls, it can and must take responsibility and be accountable for what happens within them.

“Schools should be places of learning, growth and moral courage, where young people are guided to resolve conflict through empathy and understanding, not aggression.”

The School Governing Body (SGB) and the School Leadership have reportedly initiated discussions and wider consultation regarding a comprehensive response plan for safety, discipline and positive behavioural support at the school.

Van Tonder says this inquiry will assess the need for partnerships with external experts, specialists from the Western Cape Education Department, and non-governmental organisations focused on restorative education.

“This is to help us build a culture of empathy, non-violence and conflict resolution across the school.”

The school is reportedly also investigating an anonymous digital reporting tool, allowing learners to safely share concerns about bullying or other harmful behaviour.

Additionally, counselling and psychological support have been made available to any learners directly or indirectly affected by the incident. The SGB and School Management are said to be working closely with professionals to ensure that every learner involved receives the help they need.

School activity is proceeding as normal, with additional security measures remaining in place in coordination with the police and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of all learners and the smooth running of the matric examinations.

“We remain in close communication with the relevant authorities as we seek to address and resolve the issues we face. We will continue to ensure our response is fair, transparent, and accountable.”
