The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that a technical challenge left thousands of grant beneficiaries without access to their funds on Thursday.
SASSA says all funds will be paid out on Friday 3 October 2025 to ensure that those depending on their grants are not left in the lurch.
SASSA spokesperson Andile Tshona says approximately 15 000 beneficiaries were affected. He says the agency has been working closely with Capitec and PayInc to resolve the issue speedily, emphasising that SASSA remains committed to ensuring beneficiaries are not left stranded.
“The non-payment was a result of a technical challenge that occurred between PayInc (the payments clearing house formerly known as BankservAfrica) and Capitec. The technical teams worked around the clock to resolve the issue as a top priority. Capitec and PayInc sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused and are committed to ensure necessary mitigation is put in place to prevent recurrence of such incidents. ”
Rachel Bukasa, Executive Director of civil society group, Black Sash says these “technical challenges” have devastating consequences for grant beneficiaries who rely on these funds as their only source of income.
“Even a day’s delay can mean going without food, medicine, transport, or other essential needs. We SASSA and its payment partners to put robust safeguards in place to prevent the recurrence of such failures.”
