Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit detectives have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with a shooting in front of the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The brazen shooting left one person dead, while another was seriously wounded.

Two men had just left the courthouse, after appearing on separate double murder charges, when they were surprised by armed suspects who opened fire.

Police were initially looking for four suspects. It is not clear whether the other suspects will also be arrested soon.

The incident was captured in a video and circulated widely on social media platforms.

According to the Mitchells Plain police station commander, Brigadier Brian Muller, the double murder case against the victims had been withdrawn in court shortly before they exited the building and were targeted.

The victims were allegedly affiliated with the Fancy Boys gang.

The 23-year-old suspect will appear in court on Monday on charges of murder.

Meanwhile, police say integrated operational interventions continue at identified crime hotspots in Cape Town with cordon and search, lockdown and tracing operations gaining momentum.

Deployments will remain in identified areas until calm is restored.

A strong contingent of police members from various units is also monitoring conflict within the taxi industry, where shooting incidents were recorded recently.
