The town of Brakpan has been rocked after a Police Sergeant killed his wife and injured some family members, following a domestic dispute. He then turned the weapon on himself, killing himself instantly. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the murder occurred at about 16:30 on 25 August 2025.

IPID-Spokesperson Lizzy Suping says the accused sergeant was called by the Station Commander of the Brakpan Police Station, who informed him that he must hand over his firearm to the Police, after his wife had obtained a protection order against him. The officer was out of the office as he was busy with a work assignment in the Tsakane area.

His wife had decided to stay overnight at her parents’ home in Brakpan after she had a meeting with the Police Management at the station. It is then alleged that the Sergeant had followed his wife to the home of her parents, where he fired several shots at the occupants of the dwelling.

His wife was fatally wounded, 2 children, between 13 and 15, sustained gunshot wounds as well as the wife’s mother and the domestic worker. The injured were taken to the hospital. Suping says that following the murder, the accused fled the crime scene in his car. A tracking device was used to locate him, later in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

Bottles of petrol were found on the scene

“It’s further alleged that when he realised that the Police were on his trail, he turned the gun on himself,” added Suping. She says 15 cartridge cases were discovered together with eight bullet fragments, one live bullet and 2 five-litre bottles of petrol, at the crime scene in Brakpan. Suping added that an inquest docket has been opened.
