Man killed outside Belhar church as he dropped off kids at creche

A father has been shot dead outside the Logos Assembly of God Church in Belhar on Wednesday morning.

 

Police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Drake Street at about 07:50.

 

Upon arrival on the scene, they found a 35-year-old man who sustained gunshot wounds to his head and body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

 

According to reports, he dropped off his children at the Church’s ECD Centre, when he was approached by an unknown suspect who shot him before fleeing the scene.

 

The motive for the attack is under investigation, and anyone with any information about this shooting incident is requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.

 

Pastor Albert Higgins of the Logos Church sent out a community notice of the shooting incident, expressing his deep sadness.

“A Kids World ECD parent, while dropping off their two children with his wife, was fatally shot.”

 

Higgins identified the family as the Stephens.

“We ask that you please keep the Stephens family in your prayers during this devastating time. We also up-lift our ECD staff, church family, and community members who were present and are deeply traumatised by this horrific act of violence that occurred right outside God’s house.”

 

There has been a worrying increase in gun violence over the past few weeks, with dozens of deaths recorded.
