Paramedics attend to nearly 28 medical-related incidents every day in Cape Town. City Staff have this week celebrated the bravery and dedication of paramedics and firefighters as the spotlight fell on International Paramedics Day.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says their Fire and Rescue service officials also attend to a wide range of emergencies. This includes medical calls, rescues and motor vehicle accidents.

In the last 90 days alone, they’ve responded to:
✨ 12 rescue incidents
✨ 243 trauma incidents, including 12 incidents where victims sustained gunshot wounds
✨ 273 medical-related calls
✨ 1331 motor vehicle accidents

Smith says when lives are on the line, they dispatch their Advanced Life Support paramedics. The City is the only municipality in South Africa offering this extended service.

Firefighters undergo rigorous training
At the same time, he said, their firefighters undergo rigorous training, including First Aid level 3 and Emergency First Responder training, at our IFSAC-approved training academy. He added that each fire engine is equipped with basic medical supplies, an ECG monitor, and a defibrillator.
