Published on

Samora Machel police have launched a murder investigation following a tragic shooting on Wednesday morning, 11 June, in which a 15-year-old girl was fatally wounded while en route to school.

Police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Ashley Kriel Street at approximately 08:20. Upon arrival, officers found the young victim lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel declared her deceased at the scene.

It is alleged that the girl, who was a learner at the nearby Zisukhanyo Secondary School, was shot four times and suffered a severe head injury. According to some community reports, she was deliberately targeted.

The victim’s father arrived at the scene and personally identified his daughter’s body.

The Western Cape Education Department confirmed the Grade 10 learner was travelling to school when she was killed.

Director of Communications Bronagh Hammond says the Department have extended their condolences to the family, friends and the school community for their loss.

Counselling support will be provided to learners at Zisukhanyo Secondary School, and the WCED has requested additional support and police patrols, specifically during peak learner travel times.

No arrests have been made at this stage, and the suspect or suspects remain at large.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app to report information anonymously.
