Nearly One-Third of MyCiTi Bus Project Complete in Mitchell’s Plain

The City of Cape Town says its MyCiTi expansion project along AZ Berman Drive, in Mitchell’s Plain, is now 31% complete.

So far, new artist impression boards have been unveiled near Watergate Mall and the local police station to show residents and commuters a vision of what they can expect in the next 19 months.

Despite the lane closures and major traffic disruptions the project has caused, Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas says the end result promises a safer, more affordable Bus Rapid Transit system by January 2027.

He adds the new MyCiTi red bus lanes, stations, and walkways aim to transform travel in the metro-south east, which will help to alleviate traffic heading in and out of the CBD.

“We have now installed two signboards in the vicinity of the construction areas so that commuters and residents can get an idea of what our end goal is, and be reminded of what we are trying to achieve to keep Capetonians moving. The short-term frustration is undeniable, but the long-term benefits will be well worth it and unlock new opportunities for the community,” said Quintas.
