Investigations into fire that raged for two days in Salt River

Published on

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services says investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of a fire that broke out in a 2-storey building in Salt River at the weekend.

According to spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the incident was reported to teams at around 15:50 on Saturday of a building alight in Spencer Road in Salt River.

“Crews from several Fire Stations were on scene, including an IMT Type 4 team.”

The building, named Synagogue Prophetic Church, reportedly housed two occupancies; the ground floor was used for fabrics and machinery, whilst the 1st floor was used as a church. Carelse said it should be noted that firefighters had to use force to enter the premises, as most of the exits were blocked off by rolls of materials.

Authorities confirmed that the entire ground floor was destroyed, including the machines and fabrics.

“The concrete floor, separating the floors, were cracked due to the heat that was emitted from the fire.”

The fire reportedly raged for two days as authorities were only able to extinguish the blaze by Monday at around 18:00. While investigations are underway, it has been confirmed that no one was injured in the fire.
