The police in Van Rhynsdorp have registered a case of culpable homicide for investigation after the death of ten people in a bus crash off Van Rhyns pass on Monday afternoon.

The bus, carrying carrying 42 seasonal workers from Keimoes to Ceres left the roadway, crashing through a barrier and plunged down the pass.

Police members and emergency personnel were dispatched to the crime scene where they were actively involved in the rescue operation which followed.

According to the police, 29 workers were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment while 10 people were declared dead on the scene.

The Western Cape Mobility Department earlier said 9 people died.

As part of the investigation, it will be determined whether human error or mechanical failure of the vehicle is to blame.

Police have made an appeal to anyone with information to come forward and call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
