Pick n Pay has issued a recall of three brands of Peanut Butter due to higher than standard levels of aflatoxin, which may pose a health risk

No other peanut butter brand at Pick n Pay is involved in the recall.

Peanut Butter recall: What is Aflatoxin?

Aflatoxins are a family of toxins produced by certain fungi that are found on agricultural crops such as maize (corn), peanuts, cottonseed, and tree nuts.

Exposure to aflatoxin is known to cause both chronic and acute hepatocellular injury, where liver cells are damaged and replaced with scar tissue.

Peanut Butter recall: What customers must do

Pick n Pay has advised customers who may have bought these peanut butter products to return them to Pick n Pay for a full refund, if any product has an expiry date between now and July 2025.

However, if any customer has concerns, they can return these products whether or not they fall within this expiry date, or whether products have been opened or not.

The retailer has asked customers to check their pantries and food cupboards and make sure to return the products concerned to any Pick n Pay store for a full refund.

For queries customers can call the Pick n Pay Customer Care Line on 0860 303 030.

Pick n Pay says it has also alerted the National Consumer Commission and the National Department of Health, Directorate Food Control to the recall.
