In ‘A Long Walk to Freedom‘ Mandela speaks of the role boxing played in his life; before and during imprisonment. He admitted his skill and fitness may not have been the best, but the benefits to his work, and his mental health was priceless. He wrote of how it took his mind off the struggle and allowed him to refresh his spirit and thinking.
Mandela Day is a day spent in service of the world. The United Nations designated this day to commemorate the late South African Stateman’s dedication to bring about a just society for the majority of South Africans previously legislated as second class citizens with no inclusive economic, political and social opportunity.

The dehumanizing system also contributed to the breakdown of the family structure through its labour policies. Present day South Africa continues to be haunted by this reality.
Despite the challenges, it’s incredible to see how many are motivated to change our reality. South African’s by and large are committed to work towards a more equitable society.
Well done, once again, contributing on Mandela Day
It may appear insurmountable but the world changes when you and I continue doing the right. It may not feel like it but it does impact lives positively and builds that important momentum. Do not get discouraged. You are making a difference!
A wonderful story last week was CPUT‘s boxing club being awarded a full size tournament ring. The only one of its kind for a SA tertiary institution. This was in recognition of the varsity’s boxing club and what they achieved at a recent competition. I shared what Aphiwe Ntluzwana said on THT. He is the club’s captain, and after discovering how much boxing fuels him, has dedicated his sport and craft to Madiba.

On Robben Island, boxing provided Madiba with purpose and routine in an extremely challenging environment. Again, it also fueled his resolve and determination to see a liberated South Africa. Our lives in South Africa 2023 demands that commitment.
Yes, it’s very challenging but like Madiba, if we roll up our sleeves, and use each day to contribute to making South Africa a better place, we can slowly but surely knock away at the quarry of sandstone blocking South Africa’s progress.
This country and its people deserve to benefit from our love. Let’s not waste the opportunity.
