Pick the Perfect Elopement Dress 2023

Published on

I am getting married in July this year. And after receiving quotes from service providers, I seriously considered eloping. For normal people, like myself, it is ridiculously expensive to have even an average sized wedding in this economy.

The number one reason people often elope, is to experience a day focused solely on the two of them.

Elopement photographers from Adventure Instead conducted a survey and most people answered wanting a ‘just us’ experience – without the pressure and anxiety of a traditional wedding.

But I am very family orientated, so realistically speaking, eloping would not have been an option. But now I get to live my elopement fantasy through this article by sharing the best options and tips for you if you are considering eloping.

Determine your vibe and stick to it

Ask yourself ‘how do I want to feel on the day’? Is it comfort you’re after or style? All your wardrobe decisions should then be made based on that. The last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable on the day.

There is nothing worse than a dress dripping soaking wet when it could have been avoided by simply choosing a shorter dress.

Getting married in a forest during winter might sound like a beautiful experience – but you can’t wear something that will hinder your walking and possibly get covered in mud (if that’s not the vibe you’re after).

Your location determines the outfit

Your wedding outfit should suit the location’s look and feel. A beautiful flowy shorter dress will look stunning on a beach but consider a more structured dress for a wedding in the city.

Determine how far you’ll have to walk and what the road looks like getting there to ensure that you have a comfortable experience.

You don’t want things falling out during a hike up to your location.

Imagine being annoyed while delivering your vows just because you had to struggle getting to the actual “I do” spot. AND please wear shoes you have practised walking in or just wear flats.

Picking your fab(ric) dress

Do your research about fabrics that will work well after being packed for travelling purposes. If you are packing a dress, your best bet will be an airy fabric; consider silk, organza or chiffon.

A durable and fast drying fabric will also be a good idea. There is nothing worse than a super wrinkly bonbon mermaid dress!

Lastly the fabric you choose should be durable, especially if your location features cliffs, streams and rocks.

Epic Love Photography suggests adding colour to your dress or accessories for beautiful photos that compliment your dream location.

Time to get dressed

Eloping usually means you’ll be getting ready all by yourself – maybe you’ll have your partner. But this means it is a good idea to choose a dress that you’ll be able to put on without difficulty.

Zip-up dresses can be put on in a breeze, compared to button- or lace-up frocks. Just make sure the zip is placed where you can easily access it.

If I had to elope you would have seen me in a boho styled dress. Funny enough my actual dress is far from boho; it’s sleek, plain and tight fitted.

But I think boho dresses make the most beautiful photos especially if you are getting married at a location that is rich in nature and even water (or even dessert). The fabric that’s traditionally used for boho dresses are airy, quick-drying and honestly, you’ll be able to get away with a few wrinkles on a boho dress too!
