Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela says the South African Police Service did not receive any intelligence that the July unrest would happen.

Mawela yesterday gave testimony at the Human Rights Commission’s national investigative hearing into the July unrest. Around 340 people died during the unrest.
