The Hawks arrested a 40-year-old Fidelity crewman believed to be linked to a staged cash-in-transit robbery on Borchards Quary Road, Airport Industria last year. The suspect was arrested in Gugulethu on Thursday, after investigations found that he and the CIT van driver were involved in the robbery in September 2025.
It is reported that during the robbery, the Armoured Vehicle (AV) was blocked by a White Nissan hard-body bakkie, which stopped dead in front of it. The AV collided into the back of the Nissan Hard body bakkie. As the driver tried to reverse, a White Toyota Fortuner blocked the driver from behind.
A third vehicle approached, a VW Polo, fired multiple shots at the AV, and the guards jumped out and ran for cover in the surrounding bushes. According to Hawks spokesperson, Captain Zinzi Hani, the driver was tackled by a suspect and searched.
“His cell phone and R200.00 cash were taken from his pocket. An unknown number of African male suspects surrounded the AV and explosives were placed on the truck,” added Hani
A Flying Squad vehicle, en route to a shooting in progress in Elsies River, reportedly came across the CIT that was in progress. The suspects abandoned the robbery and fled in the White Toyota Fortuner and the White Nissan hard-body bakkie.
The VW Polo hatchback was set alight and completely burnt out. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.
According to Hani, investigations revealed that the Cash in Transit Robbery appeared to have been staged, with two of the Fidelity guards believed to have been involved.
“Upon completion of the investigation, the DPP decided that two of the Fidelity guards, the Driver and Crewman, must be arrested and charged. This resulted in a warrant of arrest being obtained on 30 October 2026.”
Hani says tracing continues for the second person.
The suspect will make his first court appearance on Friday, 6 November 2026 at Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court.
