The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says the testing of positive covid-19 samples from travellers from India, as well as their close contacts, is a priority.

This will enable scientists to detect variants in a timely manner. The institute’s acting executive director, Prof. Adrian Puren says the severe resurgence of covid-19 infections in India can be attributed, in part, to the circulation of different variants.
