PICS: “Toad tunnels” installed to help protect the Western Leopard Toad

Published on

Two special toad tunnels have been installed along Peninsula Road in Zeekoevlei to allow the endangered Western Leopard Toad to pass under and avoid being hit by cars.

The area is a dangerous one for these toads who cross the road on their way to the wetlands during the breeding season.

Cape Town Environmental Education Trust, with funding from Leisure Charitable Trust and the French organisation, Fondation Ensemble, spearheaded the project – the first of its kind in South Africa.

The Trust’s CEO, Dr Anthony Roberts says planning began in 2017 already.
