The department of health says 655 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the country over the latest 24-hour monitoring period. At the same time, 34 deaths were recorded taking the death toll to 53 356. Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says as of last night, more than 289 000 health care workers have been vaccinated in the Sisonke trial.

An Artificial Intelligence powered early detection system has predicted the country is at a low risk of a third wave of Covid-19 infections, at least for now. The AI system was designed by the University of the Witwatersrand, in part-ner-ship with iThemba LABS, the Gauteng government and York University in Canada.
