The department of health says 655 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the country over the latest 24-hour monitoring period. At the same time, 34 deaths were recorded taking the death toll to 53 356. Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says as of last night, more than 289 000 health care workers have been vaccinated in the Sisonke trial.

The country is waiting on more big shipments of the J & J and Pfizer BioNTech vaccines. Sufficient stock is expected by the end of June, which will vaccinate nearly 5.9 million people. The exact delivery dates are not yet known. The 1-million doses of the J & J vaccine are expected in the second half of April and 900 000 doses in May.

An Artificial Intelligence powered early detection system has predicted the country is at a low risk of a third wave of Covid-19 infections, at least for now. The AI system was designed by the University of the Witwatersrand, in part-ner-ship with iThemba LABS, the Gauteng government and York University in Canada. Director of the Institute for Collider Particle Physics at Wits, Professor Bruce Mellado told enca this morning, that the system functions by predicting future daily confirmed cases, based on historical data from the country’s past infection history. Mellado added that although the risk for a third infection wave of Covid-19 is small across most of the provinces in South Africa, the country still remains highly vulnerable.
