The country is waiting on more big shipments of the J & J and Pfizer BioNTech vaccines. Sufficient stock is expected by the end of June, which will vaccinate nearly 5.9 million people. The exact delivery dates are not yet known. The 1-million doses of the J & J vaccine are expected in the second half of April and 900 000 doses in May.

A total of 90 000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has arrived in the country yesterday from Europe for the Sisonke study, with the last batch of 110 000 doses arriving tomorrow. So says the president of the South African Medical Research Council, prof. Glenda Gray, who is responsible for administering the research, in which 500 000 health workers receive vaccinations.

The department of health says 655 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the country over the latest 24-hour monitoring period. At the same time, 34 deaths were recorded taking the death toll to 53 356. Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says as of last night, more than 289 000 health care workers have been vaccinated in the Sisonke trial.
