80-year-old Biden runs again for President

Published on

United States President Joe Biden officially launched his campaign for re-election in 2024. This could see him as the Democratic candidate in a race against Republican contender Donald Trump – for the second time.

Biden’s announcement came in a video on Tuesday, on the fourth anniversary of the start of his first successful presidential bid. The Republican Party reacted to Biden’s announcement saying it is “out of touch”. The Republican National Committee, in a statement, said that Biden “think he deserves another years” even after creating “crisis after crisis”.

If voters let Biden ‘finish the job’, inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, more fentanyl will cross our open borders, children will continue to be left behind, and American families will be worse off…

‘People are looking for stability’

President Biden is now 80 years old. He is the oldest living president. He will be 82 at the start of a second term, and end it aged 86. The president’s age is a determining factor for some.

CNN reports that this was disputed by White House spokesperson, Andrew Bates. He says Biden has made ‘ historic progress’ that younger Americans welcome:

…including his unprecedented investments in fighting climate change, his first-of-its kind police reform executive order, his actions to support community policing and decriminalize marijuana, and getting more Americans health coverage than ever before…

White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield told NPR she’s confident of Biden’s track record in office. “The test of whether the president is capable of being president is watching the president be president,” she said. She adds that there is an advantage to him having half a century’s worth of experience in office:

I think we live in a volatile world. We live in a chaotic world…I think people are looking for stability and strong leadership. And I think that experience and wisdom is part of that…

A clean bill of health

This all seems like history repeating itself. Biden once ran a campaign where he attacked his opponent’s age. In 1972, he was 29-years-old, he ran against Republican Senator, Cale Boggs, who was 63-years-old. During the campaign, Biden said that Cale had “lost that old twinkle in his eye”.

However, Biden seems to be going nowhere. He works out five days a week and is fit and healthy. This is according to his annual physical. The president’s personal physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor says the “president remains fit for duty, and fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations”.
