Lets a look at some of those iconic 80s and 90s hits.
1. SWEET DREAMS – EURYTHMICS
2. EYE OF THE TIGER – SURVIVOR
This was the theme song to Rocky III, which was the biggest movie of 1982. As the years went by and this song became a pop culture touchstone, it was generally used more for parody to show a character comically striving. Family Guy, My Name Is Earl and The King of Queens all used the song in this manner, and in 2009 it was taken to a new level of absurdity in The Big Bang Theory, where it was used in a montage where scientists tried to solve a complex equation – every beat would cut to another shot of them staring at a chalkboard.
3. CARELESS WHISPER – GEORGE MICHAEL
In his autobiography Bare, George Michael explains the inspiration behind Careless Whisper. He tells the story of a teenage romance between himself and a young girl named Helen. While dating her he came across a childhood crush named Jane and went on to date her too. “The whole idea of ‘Careless Whisper’ was the first girl finding out about the second – which she never did.”
“The whole time I thought I was being cool, being this two-timer, but there really wasn’t that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty about the first girl – and I have seen her since – and the idea of the song was about her.”
4. I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY – WHITNEY HOUSTON
5. WHEN DOVES CRY – PRINCE
In the US, this was the #1 song of 1984. It topped the charts for five weeks over the summer, and kept Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark” at #2, preventing The Boss from ever having a #1 hit.
6. MY HEART WILL GO ON – CELINE DION
7. CANDLE IN THE WIND ’97 – ELTON JOHN
This song is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, a famous actress and sex symbol who died of a drug overdose in 1962. The “candle in the wind” represents her short, but eventful life.
Elton’s lyricist, Bernie Taupin, rewrote the lyrics to this song after Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car accident on August 31, 1997. Proceeds from “Candle In The Wind ’97” raised about £38 million (approximately $62 million) for Diana’s Memorial Fund, with another £34 million raised through donations. In 1998, Elton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
8. BABY ONE MORE TIME – BRITNEY SPEARS
9. MACARENA – LOS DEL RIO
Did you know that the world record for the most people performing one dance at the same time was set by 50,000 people in Yankee stadium while dancing the “Macarena.”?
10. WANNABE – SPICE GIRLS
