Wynberg court shooting: More arrests imminent

Published on

Cape Town Police say more arrests are imminent following the brazen shooting of a 50-year-old man inside the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 8 April.

The victim, Dingalomoya Cintso, a taxi driver from Vrygrond, was gunned down while waiting for his case to be heard outside Courtroom D. It has been reported that Cintso was one of the accused in the murder of a Junky Funky Kids gang member back in January.

A 35-year-old suspect, Shireen Matthews, from Strandfontein, appeared in the same court on 14 April and was charged with murder after her arrest over the weekend. Matthews allegedly planned the hit on Cintso in retaliation for the earlier killing he was said to have been involved in.

Following her court appearance, the NPA told the media they believe they have a solid case against Matthews. They contend that she recruited the gang members to carry out the murder on Cintso.

She will appear in court again on 23 April. Reports have indicated that up to six suspects could be involved, with some currently being questioned.

There are still serious questions surrounding how the weapon used to kill Cintso was able to be smuggled into the court. It is known that the metal detectors were not working at the time of the shooting.

Western Cape SAPS management has expressed confidence in the team of investigators as the investigation unfolds, although they have not yet revealed the motive for the murder.

Gang violence has flared up in the Vrygrond and Steenberg areas in recent weeks, prompting the deployment of additional metro police officers to help quell tensions. It is believed that the shooting inside the Wynberg court may be linked to the ongoing turf war.

On the same day that Cintso was shot dead, another taxi driver was shot in the stomach as he stopped at a traffic light on Prince George Drive in Steenberg.

The City’s MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says at least 14 shooting incidents were recorded in the area over the past 14 days. Smith also mentioned that maximum resources, including 64 local law enforcement officers, have been deployed to help stabilize the situation.
